Magazines / Goodbye Marie Claire, hello Women's Health

Super nice cover! Sadly...this one's the last...
__

Is this true? Or i just don't get what "Goodbye MC! Three years of style and substance" means? Three years ago when I first heard of the news that there will be a local version of MC, I felt mixed emotions/reactions. I was happy because it was something good the Philippine magazine industry; it's not like any country can have MC local version just like that. But at the same time I was quite unsure of this move because there's already Preview, another women's magazine (and then some) in Summit Media's stable of titles. They were doing and looking ok for me but I only payed closer attention to MC when saw that amazing Lea Salonga cover. Well, we are living in hard times....for a magazine junkie like me, it's sad to see any magazine go. Locally, only a title or two has folded up so far...hopefully this is the last!

But.....as I see it......our magazine industry is still a strong one because at this crazy point in time new magazines are still being released left and right! I saw a new MMPI title last month (HAIR, I think...will follow up later) and now this:

She-men's health!

Well...girls really have it better because for every new men's magazine released, there are what, 300 new magazines for women?! hahaha JK.

Magazines / I love LOVE

__

The top photo is the actual premiere issue cover; the next three are the
teaser covers. Katie Grand (Dazed and Confused, Pop) is responsible for this new magazine that will be launched on 19 February 2009. While the rest of the magazine world welcomes this new and super inspirational magazine, I'll just wait and see what the internets will share. hehehe..

The premiere issue cover image looks kind of freaky, but it's the beautiful kind of freaky for me. And the handwritten style cover blurbs, wow!

Sorry, I forgot their nameThis is Kadangyan playing ethno-tribal music. I liked their performance..folky-Filipino ethnic-ey music. I wanted to jump jump jump... Well, I did actually but after a few leaps I was finally able to restrain myself from releasing the uncontainable energy I had that night. hehehe

You can buy either the magazine+the original artwork or the magazine only. The mag only options costs P400 (!). The mag+original artwork costs P3..grand!!!! The proceeds, AFAIK will fund the construction of the Manila Center for the Arts.

I wanted either one of these two (grey+green). But 3 thousand pesosesoses don't grow on trees...

Magazines / New magazines...

Tsuper
Tsuper, From October Eighty

Stella
Stella, From Sesame Seed Creatives (I think? correct me if I'm wrong..)
__

I still haven't decided if I'll buy these or not. I saw Tsuper on the newsstands way back then (last year I think??) while Stella, just last weekend. I'm undecided not because they don't look good enough to buy and try, but because I just don't have a budget for new magazines! I have sort of told myself to try to buy every newly released magazine out there this year but I have come to a realization that it's not so possible at this moment. I mean, I thought I could because last year, I kindof did! But last year was different because the gap between releases are quite long, I have enough time to think and save up. Now, new magazines are being released left and right I can't buy all of them premier issues anymore. At least it's good to think that while major titles are folding up left and right abroad or reducing/cutting costs (Hello Men's Vogue?), the Philippine magazine industry is doing the opposite. I just hope that the new magazines will last longer than issue one or two. Mmmm, as for these two, judging from these covers they probably will!! :-)

Events / Art In Site Magazine Launching

See you there!

**EDIT**

I just received a press release regarding the event:

FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE:

Art in Site Magazine to launch at the Ayala Museum

Contact: Catherine Young, managingeditor@artinsitemagazine.com

MANILA, Philippines – January 12, 2009. On Saturday, January 17, Manila's arts aficionados and patrons will be welcomed to a special reception at the Ayala Museum to announce the publication of the inaugural issue of Art in Site Magazine. The quarterly publication will be produced in Manila and distributed in the Philippines and the U.S. It is envisioned to be a leading resource for, by and about Filipino artists filled with insightful and engaging articles relating to the arts in all its forms to incite a renaissance of sorts—a rekindled interest in local art, artists, and a renewed sense of pride to be Filipino.

Art in Site Magazine is not just another arts magazine. Its history and unique vision are as remarkable as the people behind its creation. Patricia Laurel, editor of the magazine has the qualifications and pedigree: great-grand niece of national hero Jose Rizal; educated in Germany and the United States; writing credentials with European Stars and Stripes and Associated Press in the United States. Under Laurel's leadership, Art in Site Magazine was conceived under the banner of a Cooperative for Artists in the Philippines and the U.S. as a way to connect a growing international community of artists of Filipino descent.

In every issue of Art in Site Magazine, a special article will be devoted to an update on the Cooperative's ultimate goal — the establishment of the Manila Center for the Arts. The Center will be a physical structure that can be the hub for artistic development, exhibition and study; a nurturing home for Filipino artists, arts educators, and students to convene. Patterned after the highly successful San Francisco Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the plans include a Center School for young artists, state-of-the-art performance and exhibition spaces for small audiences, the provision of legal and practical services for the artistic community, and advocacy programs to increase government and private support of the arts in all of its forms.

"The idea to publish a culture and the arts magazine was the result of a number of rejections that I experienced as a writer," says Laurel. "The first rejection was the sudden death of the first book in my trilogy of Young Adult Fiction. The book was first published in the Philippines. A few media appearances and talks, but it didn't pan out." Unhindered, Laurel continued to write.

The second rejection was the eye-opener: Laurel had just finished her second book manuscript and was in a celebratory mood. She rushed to a nearby confectionery store in Honolulu to purchase and devour her favorite creamy, dark chocolate caramel squares. The courteous, young man behind the counter looked like a 'kababayan' and was asked if he was Filipino. The reply he gave was a resounding, "unfortunately." He realized what he said and apologized after seeing the reaction to his single remark.

The Cooperative for Artists, through Art in Site Magazine and eventually through the Manila Center for the Arts, will showcase and promote the Filipino's unique and brilliant artistic talent, our vast and distinct cultural heritage; to impart knowledge through culture and the arts to our youth; to interpret, entertain and invite dialogue and provide food for thought. It will provide coverage and insightful treatment of Filipino artists and writers—in the Philippines and abroad— and an intelligent perspective on our own history distinct culture, and aspirations for the future.

The design of the inaugural issue of Art in Site Magazine reflects its cooperative structure and approach. An international "Design a Cover Project" attracted more than 1700 entries from Filipino artists around the world. These entries will be on display at the launching reception on January 17.

Magazines / Status Mag - Free No More

__

I dunno if I'd take this as good news or bad news. Why good news? I've been checking this out since issue one (thanks to Daily Nagali, who is now on hiatus again :-c ) and have been trying to get my own hard copy but unfortunately, the distribution points are always out-of-stock. Or sometimes, the sales-person is just plain clueless. Anyway, I sort-of prayed before that Status should start being 'for sale' so that I can have my copy for sure. Prayers really get answered when you ask really hard. hehehe

Read this (from their newsletter):
Yeah, we know that everyone wants them some STATUS and they want it bad. But we're gonna go ahead and blame the recession for why not everybody has a copy of our wonderful mag in their hands.

Higher printing costs and advertisers who need to know that one greedy Starbucks customer didn't just hoard a whole stockpile of issues, means that we've got to start selling STATUS.

These days, love just might cost a thing--especially when we discharge a lot of sweat, blood, and tears just to get all those foreign features and all that slick photography onto our pages.

But you still love us, right? Which is why you wont mind cashing P 180 out for a publication that wont let a lil' inflation get it down. We're gonna stand out on those magazine stands and offer everybody the STATUs theyve always craved. And more, of course: a bi-monthly that looks forward in features, beyond in scope, and now, can be found anywhere. Sure, we're selling—but we're never selling out.
Yay! And now, why bad news? Oh well, I've been having my own mini-recession myself now. In times like these when funds are on a critical low, the last thing you want is another wallet-burner. But I want it. As I said earlier, prayers get answered when you ask really hard. I need a new raket!

Magazines / Garage August-September 2008

__

Yay!
Congratulations to Sesame Seed Creatives for releasing a new super nice magazine, Garage! We have quite a number of style magazines locally but there's only a few that's dedicated for men. Cool editorials, smart articles, great photography, nice printing/paper—it has the things I'm looking for a magazine. And more I guess. Plus it's got stuff that I might actually buy. (Might! If i only had the time and money haha)

Nay!
Hmmm. Truth to tell, I didn't fancy that big main fonts they used (see the words Manual and Agenda on the pics above). It's ok, I just didn't fancy it. BUT hello? Hello telephone?? It's just me and the darn font so there. Not a big deal, no? And just to add: Akihiro Sato is a muscle-y and big-built person so that skinny style (see photo 2nd row, left) would probably look mucho better with Ash Stymest types. hahaha LOL Seriously, I really didn't see much to disagree about.

I say...
I love it. Like I said, it has the things I want in a mag—cool editorials, smart articles, great photography, nice printing/paper. Another addition to my regular mags-to-buy list. It comes out bi-monthly. I'm wondering where the next issue is because this is the August-September issue and it's October already. Oh, wait that's a good excuse to those who don't have their copy yet—buy it now while it's still current issue! hehe
